وقد تم الإنتهاء من بناء القلعة سنة 1521 بعد عدة قرون من البناء ، ومع حلول القرن السابع عشر كان تأثير الأديرة والكنائس يكاد يختفي من حياة الناس في أوروبا ، وازداد ذلك بعد الثورة الفرنسية ، فتحولت قلعة مونت سانت ميشيل إلى سجن ، وبمرور الأيام ازدادت حالتها سوءا حتى عام 1873 واستعادت رونقها من جديد ببعض الترميمات والإصلاحات .
